The Construction of the Camp Nou started in early 1954 and in just three years it was open to the public, in 1957. It is the successor of the old Camp de Les Corts which had a capacity of 60,000 spectators. At that time the popularity of the team was increasing due to several reasons, with the staute of Ladislao Kubala being one of them. He was one of the great football legends who used to play as midfielder or striker. To understand what this football player meant to the FC Barcelona, you should only take a look at the records left. His name was on the list of top 50 players of the twentieth century and he is the fifth leading scorer of the FC Barcelona even today.
The name of the current Camp Nou stadium, the largest stadium in Europe with a capacity for 98,787, was primarily Joan Gamper. But as the name was in conflict with the authorities at that time, it was decided to change the name to something more “neutral ” and finally was given the name of “Football Club of Barcelona”. Although it was popularly called Camp Nou, It was called with different names such as Camp vell, Les Corts and Camp Nou. This name was not officially adopted until the year 2001 when President Joan Gaspart organized a meeting with different parties in order to decide about the name and to formalize the name to Camp Nou.
Currently you can visit the Camp Nou, do a guided tour, learn about the history of Barcelona, the best played games in the history of this team and finally visit of the Museum of this club.
