The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria, often simply referred to as La Boqueria is a sprawling market located in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona and right off las ramblas. It houses more than 45 different market stalls offering a wide variety of food, including baked goods, meats, desserts, cheeses, seafood, organic products and vegetables.
La Boqueria market first sprung up in the 13th century and was regarded as an offshoot of another local market until the 1800s. In 1835, La Boqueria received official recognition and was designated to a new building that opened in 1840. Long after, those other stalls like the fish markets have been added to it.
Nowadays there are different courses related to food and cooking offered in the Gastronomic center of the market. The courses combine theory and practice. It talks about the variety and origin of products, cooking techniques, preparation of food, etc.
Nearby La Boqueria you can see las ramblas, Gran Teatre del Liceu, the Palau de la Virreina, the headquarters of Barcelona’s City Council Culture Institute.
